The VCAA Problem Solving Methodology

The VCAA Problem Solving Methodology, or PSM, is an effective way of solving problems in a structural way, but is it one of, or even the best way? The answer to this can be linked to user preference, but in a majority opinion, the answer would probably be a no.

Don't get me wrong, the VCAA PSM (see above link) is a great way to solve problems, it's just not THE best. In fact, there are many more, such as the OODA loop* which is a military problem solvent and the 8D PSM* which is typically used by professionals and engineers. While other methods are available, such as the above mentioned, different methods are used for different things. For example, the OODA loop is a concept originally applied to the combat operations process, often at the strategic level in military operation, the 8D PSM is used for engineering problems, and the VCAA PSM is used for information technology problems. Whereas there are better and more effective ways for problem solving than VCAA PSM, the ways in which they are used differ, therefore if used for what it was designed for, the VCAA PSM is a good method to use.

You may be wondering why I haven't actually mentioned what the VCAA Problem Solving Methodology lacks, as you are correct to do so. The VCAA Problem Solving Methodology is a simple, yet effective PSM to use. What the VCAA PSM lacks, is that it cannot go into great depth to solve the problem, it only really skims on the surface, but you could argue that it is not needed to go into depth because the target audience doesn't require it to do so. As with others, they go into more depth because the target audience requires it to do so, such as the 8D PSM, which is used by engineers. Basically, all problem solving methodologies are useful, but it is more useful for certain parties as opposed to others.
